Kwan Yung Yee obtained a bachelor’s degree with a major in organisational communications and a minor in visual arts from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2013, and subsequently a master’s degree in fine arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong the following year. Kwan relates the most intimate and entangled stories through her surrealistic depiction of twisted sub consciousness in a plethora of shapes, lines and dusky colours which also reveal intertwined shadows as they distort in between fiction and reality.
“Reality is merely a long, steady illusion. My perceptions form a universe in which I am the reason for every existence. I sometimes it feel like I am not myself and I do not know where I am or how I feel. Is there an emptiness on my chest?” The Reality / Illusion explores the intimacy of the artist’s own world through monologues and reveals the elements of the inner and outer worlds, as well as the elements within oneself and the surroundings. A self-exploration filled with repeat and overlapping spaces which beget self-images one after another speaking of the bitterness and frustration from the interaction with uncountable nameless souls.
